IT

November 2, 2001

So here IT is. I have four things to say about it.

  1. Boo.
  2. Cool.
  3. There has to be more to this.
  4. Get a bike — even a really good one for way fewer dollars

If this is the final product or this is what they see as the solution to pollution and transportation in the future of our cities, they are wrong. There must be more. Forget the cost. Forget the speed (or lack thereof). Forget the inherent danger of being exposed with little more than a bike helmet.

Dean Kamen lives in New Hampshire. It (no pun intended) gets cold there. It snows. What is he thinking? Would you want to make even the 5-mile (if your very, very lucky) trip to work on one of these when it’s -5 Fahrenheit, lotsa wind and snowy streets? Not me (at least not in this format).

It is amazing technology. It’s possibly a very big step towards something TRULY big. I have no doubt that Kamen is the real thing and probably capable of developing something as useful for healthy people as he has been able to do for those less fortunate.

But for now… Crap.
