conan’s canada show backlash

February 20, 2004

This is absurd. The French Canadians are all up in arms about the comments made by a talking dog puppet. Let me repeat this — a talking dog puppet! It was pretty funny stuff too.Anyway. Conan did an apology last night, in a comedic way, but still an apology. This windbag had this to say:

“It’s too late, but it’s better than not giving his apology,” said Madeleine Meilleur, Ontario’s minister of culture and francophone affairs on Wednesday. “The comments should never have been made.”

I just fired off an email (“Regarding Conan’s comments and the apparent lack of a sense of humor in Franco-Canada… You’re a jackass, pardon my French.”).

democracy

February 13, 2004

This says a lot to me. Tyler (a Scot, I believe from the 19th century) was talking about the greatest democracy to the time, the Athenean democracy. He also talks about how democracies only last 200 years or so. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. . .[Eventually], the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public Treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy. . . The world’s greatest civilizations have progressed through this sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from great courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again to bondage.”–Andrew Tyler Fraser

I figure we’re somewhere between Complacency and Apathy.

getting bigger

February 2, 2004

He’s had his two week appointment and has gained over a pound and a half, though he’s still tiny. The mini-van isn’t as appalling as I’d imagined. In fact I rather like driving it. It sure is handy! (Man am I getting old).

We’re in the process of piling up a bunch of snow. If it keeps up the rest of the afternoon we’ll end up with a foot at least. It’s kind of nice as it’s been incredibly cold and more than a month since we’ve gotten any before yesterday.

I’ve been playing open adult hockey a few times a week at night it’s been a ton of fun. It really is nice to be able to be more active again. 72 pounds and counting!

Going to the Wild game tonight against the Blues with Field. It should be fun,
